What Is an IFSC Code? Meaning, Format and How to Read It

Last updated: 25 September 2026

Every time you add a beneficiary for an online transfer, the bank asks for an IFSC code. Most people copy it from somewhere without knowing what it means. This guide explains what an IFSC code is, how it is built, and why getting it right matters.

What does IFSC stand for?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11-character code that identifies one specific bank branch in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) uses it to route electronic payments to the right bank and branch, so that money reaches the correct place among the tens of thousands of bank branches in the country.

The structure of an IFSC code

Every IFSC code has exactly 11 characters, made of three parts:

  • Characters 1 to 4: the bank code. Four letters that identify the bank. Every branch of the same bank starts with the same four letters, for example SBIN for State Bank of India or HDFC for HDFC Bank.
  • Character 5: always the digit zero. It is reserved for future use and is the same on every IFSC code. It is the digit 0, not the letter O.
  • Characters 6 to 11: the branch code. Six characters that identify the branch. Most are digits, but some banks, especially cooperative banks, also use letters.

Worked example

Take the illustrative code HDFC0001234:

  • HDFC is the bank code (HDFC Bank).
  • 0 is the reserved fifth character.
  • 001234 is the branch code.

Two branches of the same bank never share the same IFSC code, and the code always contains capital letters and digits only, with no spaces or symbols.

What is an IFSC code used for?

You need an IFSC code when you send money electronically to someone's bank account using:

  • NEFT, National Electronic Funds Transfer;
  • RTGS, Real Time Gross Settlement; and
  • IMPS, Immediate Payment Service, when you pay to an account number.

You will also be asked for it when you set up a salary or pension payment, a vendor payment, an EMI or loan mandate, a government benefit transfer, or a standing instruction. See our guide to NEFT, RTGS and IMPS for how they compare.

When you pay with UPI using a mobile number or a UPI ID, you usually do not need an IFSC code. It matters when you pay to an account number and IFSC instead.

IFSC code vs other bank codes

  • Account number: identifies your account within a branch. The IFSC code identifies the branch itself. You need both.
  • SWIFT/BIC code: used for international transfers, not for payments inside India.
  • Branch name: not a reliable identifier, because many branches have similar names in different cities.

Can an IFSC code change?

Yes. When banks merge, or when a branch is renamed or moved, its IFSC code can change. After the public sector bank mergers of 2019 and 2020, many branches were moved to the acquiring bank's new codes and the old ones eventually stopped working. If a saved beneficiary suddenly fails, check whether the branch's IFSC code has changed.

How to check an IFSC code

A code that has the right format is not necessarily a real branch. Use our Verify IFSC Code tool: it checks the format and then confirms whether the code exists in our database, showing the bank and branch it belongs to. If you only know the branch, use Find IFSC Code. Our guide to finding an IFSC code lists more ways to look it up.

Key points to remember

  • An IFSC code has 11 characters: 4 letters, the digit 0, then 6 characters.
  • It identifies a branch, not just a bank.
  • It is needed for NEFT, RTGS and account-number IMPS transfers.
  • It can change after a merger, so verify before you send a large payment.
